Recent VCU graduate Jose Henriquez teaches a photography program for Southside teens called “Viendo/Seeing”. The main objective is give kids a platform for creative expression of their ideas about themselves, their community, and their personal struggles. The kids meet weekly to photograph as well as write about their experiences. They collectively talk about each other’s work and look at past and contemporary artists along the way. At the end of the program, every student chooses one or a few images to showcase at their local library, Broad Rock, in the Southside.
